Green Speak

This is a blog for civil rights. for animal rights. for the environment. for the planet.

The earth is a beautiful, fragile place that we take advantage of every day. Let's unite and do something about deforestation, animal abuse, water conservation, pollution, and the many other injustices happening because Mother Nature can only do so much on her own.

As a wonderful man once said, "be the change you wish to see".

If we don't do anything about it, no one will, so DO SOMETHING!

Hershey Chocolate is Linked to Forced Child Labour →

To stand up against this injustice come to the Hershey store in Times Square on June 8th to help “Raise the Bar” ad rally againt Child Labor.

SAVE THE DATE: JUNE 8

Hey, Guys!

Green America is hosting a rally against the Hershey candy company in NYC on June 8th. Most of you probably know that Hershey treats their animals poorly, but what you may not know is that they are also guilty of forced child labor.

World Day Against Child Labor is on June 12th and this rally is a (hopefully successful) attempt to pressure Hershey to “go Fair Trade and ensure it’s supply chain is free from forced child labor.”

When: June 8, 2011

Where: Hershey’s store in Times Square 1593 Broadway

I will be making a few more posts about the Hershey company in order to educate those of you who don’t know about the animal cruelty and child labor that is hidden from the public. Hope to see you there! If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!

LIPTON TEA STOPS TESTING ON ANIMALS!!!!

It’s a great day!!! ACTIVISM WORKS.

Here is the article from Vegetarian Star:

Activism works. And sometimes it works quite quickly.

Last month, we brought you the news about Lipton conducting animal tests with its teas in an effort to prove the beverage treated several ailments like high cholesterol and bowel issues. Unilever, the parent company of Lipton, has made the announcement it is no longer conducting these tests on animals, which included specifically breeding the animals to have certain medical conditions and purposely exposing them to toxins to see if Lipton tea would cure these conditions.

According to PETA’s blog, Unilever has announced, “Unilever is committing to no animal testing for our tea and tea-based beverages, with immediate effect.”

That’s sounds pretty sweet to us. As sweet as warm green tea with drops of agave nector or natural cane sugar stirred  in.

Thousands of people in support of the ban sent emails to the company requesting the testing  be stopped.

According to PETA, the following tea companies also do not conduct tests on animals:

  • Stash Tea
  • Luzianne Tea
  • Twinings
  • Honest Tea
  • Ocean Spray
  • Welch’s
  • POM Wonderful

I know I already posted this video, but I think it is extremely crucial that people watch it.

Tips for making your Thanksgiving Dinner more Vegetarian

TIPS:

  • Make the holiday stuffing vegetarian-friendly by using vegetable broth instead of a meat-based broth.
  • Great gravy is a cinch with canned Franco-American mushroom gravy or Hain instant vegan gravy, available in traditional brown or “chicken” flavors. Just add water and simmer.
  • When baking the holiday bread, be sure to use an egg replacer and soy milk in place of eggs and milk.
  • Swap the milk and butter with soy milk and margarine for vegan mashed potatoes that everyone will love.
  • Be sure to have a vegan dressing for the salad
  • Forgo the butter this year and use margarine instead.
  • Save time in the kitchen by having each of your guests bring a vegan dish to share. POTLUCK :)

University of Michigan Tortures Animals

This is an article off of the PETA Website. If you attend or know anyone at University of Michigan, you can do something about this! Write a letter or put a petition together- raise awareness!

CATS TORMENTED AND PIGS STABBED IN THE HEART AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Documents recently obtained by PETA reveal that the University of Michigan’s (UM) Survival Flight course for nurses has been tormenting live cats and pigs in cruel and deadly medical-training exercises, even though UM already uses state-of-the-art human-patient simulators to teach the same skills in other courses for nurses and physicians.

Cats—who in the past have been purchased by UM from animal shelters—have a hard plastic tube repeatedly forced down their delicate windpipes for intubation training and are frequently killed after the procedure. Pigs have holes cut into their limbs, throats, and chests and have needles stabbed into their bones and hearts for trauma training exercises before they are killed.

Studies by leading medical experts have repeatedly found that in addition to saving animals, the use of simulators is superior to the use of animal labs for preparing trainees to perform the lifesaving skills taught in UM’s Survival Flight course. The Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association, which is the professional organization representing flight nurses, endorses the use of simulators to teach these skills as well.

Please take a minute of your time to contact university officials and respectfully ask them to immediately replace the use of cats and pigs for these cruel training exercises with non-animal methods such as the modern human-patient simulators that are already in use at UM.

Putting your subject line and letter into your own words will help draw attention to your e-mail.

Stop Child Trafficking Now

Stop Child Trafficking Now is a non-profit organization that is focused on stopping child trafficking by targeting the source of sex slavery: predators who drive the sex industry everywhere in the world, including America. STCNow has allied with specially trained elite operatives familiar with what it takes to infiltrate, investigate and bring to justice the predators victimizing children worldwide.

Almost everyone is aware that children are being sold into sex slavery in many third world countries, but what most people don’t know is that child trafficking is becoming an outstanding injustice right here in the United States. Children in your community are being abducted and sold into the sex industry every day.

Did you know?

  • 600,000 – 800,000 people are bought and sold across international borders each year; 50% are children, most are female. The majority of these victims are forced into the commercial sex trade. – U.S. Department of State, 2004, Trafficking in Persons Report, Washington, D.C.

300,000 children in the U.S. are at risk every year for commercial sexual exploitation. -U.S. Department of Justice

You can do something to help stop child trafficking. Register to fundraise by participating in a walk near you. Theres are tons of walks and fundraising events happening all the time and there is always something you can do, whether it is just spreading the word and raising awareness, walking, or making donations.
